History of Cohoes

In 1848, Cohoes was incorporated as a village. In 1869 it was chartered as a city. The City of Cohoes is located 5 miles north of Albany, the Capital of New York State. Cohoes sits on the both the Mohawk and Hudson River. Cohoes is 3.7 square miles of land. Cohoes is the home to the "Cohoes Falls" which is the the 2nd Largest drop in North America  behind Niagara Falls.

Cohoes is also known for the Van Schaicks. The Van Schaick Mansion on Van Schaick Island was built in the 1730s; it was one of the sites used as a military headquarters during the Revolution War and used as New York's State Capitol by Gov. Clinton in 1977

Both the Erie and Champagne Canals use to run through Cohoes, construction finished in 1823.

In 1866, during excavation work for construction of Mill #3 of the Harmony Mills, the bones of a mastadon were unearthed over a period of several weeks. The Mastadon bones are located at the NYS Museum.
